Customers should look for a consultancy that will set out, in writing, a clear brief with deliverables and timescales, with the work programme clearly set out. This applies to all projects, whether it is for a few day's work or a year's work. The project plan should define what the consultants role is relative to the customer's management.

Usually the consultant is the advisor, while the manager retains operational control and should agree the programme step by step. What opportunities are set out for review of progress and amendment of the programme from time to time?
